Paper plate spider
Supplies needed:
paper plate
construction paper
pipe cleaners(chenille stems)
paperclips, pennies, buttons
tape, crayons, scissors, string
Cut out eight strips of construction paper 1 inch wide and 11 inches long. Fold them back and forth like an accordian. These will be the spiders legs. The paper plate will be the spider's body. Make a spider's face on the bottom of the plate. Put a paper clip at the end of each leg to add weight to the spider's "feet". If the paper for the legs is rather stiff, more weight may be needed. Buttons or pennies can be taped on. Poke a hole in the center of the plate and attach a length of string through the hole, taping it to the plate or tieing a knot in the string. Experiment to find the right balance point so the spider doesn't tilt too much. Hold the spider by it's string and see how it walks along the floor, and jumps onto chairs.
Rainbow Jars
Go on a nature walk with your child to collect a variety of nature items for layering in this jar. All the items used should be completely dry or the bottle will get moldy and smelly after awhile.
Supplies needed:
empty jar
funnel or spoon
Sand, small rocks, shells, dried leaves, dried grass, seeds, twigs, egg shells, macaroni, coffee grounds, popcorn kernals, small scraps of paper, small balls of tin foil, pieces of yarn
Separate the materials into piles or small dishes. Fill the jar with layers of materials of contrasting colors and textures.
