1. Welcome from Rachel!

Where has the summer gone?! It seems like yesterday we were all looking forward to summer, and then it was gone! I’ve missed a couple of months for this ezine; busy with summer holiday plans but now I’m ready to get back at it and bring you great craft and other ideas for your preschoolers. The trees are all ablaze in red, yellow and oranges and this issue will help your kids enjoy and celebrate the beauty of this Autumn season as well as some Thanksgiving ideas for those of us who live in Canada. Thanksgiving in Canada is October 11th this year.

The beauty of Autumn

Coffee Filter Leaf

Supplies Needed:
Paper coffee filter
Washable markers or watercolor paints
Paintbrush
Spraybottle with water

Cut out a leaf shape from the coffee filter. Flatten the coffee filter and place it on a plate or newspaper as the paint or markers and water will soak through. Using Autumn colors of red, orange, and yellow and using either paint or markers, color the leaf using more than one color. Spray the coffee filter leaf with waters so the colors run and blend together. Set aside on paper towels to dry.

Multi Colored Turkey Hand

Trace or have your child trace around their hand on a piece of paper. Have your child color the palm brown and then color each finger using one color for each finger:red, green, yellow and orange. On the thumb you can add the eye, beak and that little red dangly thing under the beak.

Tips:

Using Scissors

Remind your children to keep “thumbs up” when they hold scissors. Tell them to hold the paper with one hand and take tiny little bites with the “jaws” of the scissors.

Using Pencils

Each child will need a cotton ball, pom-pom, or small ball of playdough for this trick. Place the cottonball in the palm of their hand and tell them to hold it down with their pinkie and ring finger. (Explain that it is “magic” and will help them write.) Next ask them to pick up their pencil. They will have the correct grip!
